People love to travel to different places around the world. But for those with diabetes, they have to take extra precautions.
Diabetes is a condition wherein the body does not produce, does not have enough, or does not respond properly to insulin. This hormone, secreted in the pancreas, enables cells to absorb the sugar glucose in order to convert it to energy. With none or insufficient insulin, glucose begins to build in the blood, which leads to many complications.
If you are a diabetic, you need to take some measures before leaving so you could enjoy your holiday abroad.
First, find out the required vaccinations for your destination, and have yourself vaccinated with these. Do this process around four to six weeks before travelling since some vaccines can cause flu-like symptoms.
In addition, you need to apply travel insurance; this is very important. Check out your insurance company for details. It should cover your return ticket and recovery charges for insulin or equipment replacement.
You also need to have a list of hospitals and health centres in your destination. Make sure that they are capable of handling your needs.
Pack as much insulin, syringes, and tablets as will be needed. If you have to purchase them in your destination, make sure that the types and strengths of the meds are the same or compatible with your own and produced by a reputable pharmacological company. In addition, bring along a glucose monitoring equipment.
Likewise, do not forget to along a diabetes identity card, a recommendation and information letter from the general physician or hospital diabetes team, a list of all the medications you are taking, and other important documents you might need in case of an emergency.
Doing these tips prior to leaving will make travelling easier for you.
