A Diabetic Diet Sample: It’s Easy to Eat Right

Many people groan upon learning they have diabetes. But with control, it is easy to eat right. Here is a diabetic diet sample.

The essential part of a diabetic diet is to monitor carbohydrates. Fortunately with all the attention on low carbohydrate diets these days, it is easy to find the carbohydrate information you need for each food.  Don’t let the name scare you: carbohydrates are simply simple sugars or complex starches. Typically a person with diabetes is allowed 50 to 60 percent of their diet to be from carbohydrates.

To help with meal planning, the American Diabetes Association has come up with a diet plan that is very flexible. The plan will vary according to several factors so it is important to see your doctor, and perhaps a nutritionist, to obtain a diet that meets your needs.

In general, the ADA diet involves eating enough carbohydrates, while limiting proteins, fats and sugar.

For example, in a diabetic diet sample, you could have:

For breakfast
Two slices of whole wheat bread
A small piece of fruit
A cup of non-fat milk
1 egg

For lunch
A peanut butter sandwich
A cup of salad
1 ¾ c of whole strawberries

For dinner
4 oz  of chicken
1 ½ c of cooked vegetables
2/3 c of rice or pasta

That doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Of course, your diet will vary according to the plan outlined by your doctor or dietitian. There is a wide variety of food you can eat. Technically, no food is forbidden but junk food, such as salty or sugary snacks, are meant to be special treats. For those with diabetes, it is especially important to limit them to rare occasions.

If you get cravings for sugary snacks, fortunately there are now many sugar substitutes you can use. Even children with diabetes can enjoy sugar free candy and sugar free Jello.

As you can see from this diabetic diet sample, the idea is to eat healthy foods in the right amounts. Many families find that by following a diabetic diet, everyone is healthier. Everyone gets closer to their ideal weight and their cholesterol levels reach normal limits.
Some people with Type II (insulin dependent or adult onset) diabetes find their blood sugar levels resolve to the point where they are no longer diabetic.

This diabetic diet sample is only intended as an example. Be sure to follow the diet prescribed for you. As you become adjusted to it, you will find it a healthy and enjoyable way to eat.
